There was finally some big NFL news today as Cam Newton has signed with the New England Patriots on a one year $7.5 million full of incentives. I personally was expecting New England to sign Newton, as he would be a great guy to have if Jarrett Stidham struggles in the preseason, or he gets injured. When Newton is healthy, he is a reliable starter that would be for sure a top 15 quarterback in the NFL. It’ll be interesting to see how the Patriots utilize Newton in an offense that with quarterbacks like Brady and now Stidham, are more pocket passers than quarterbacks that often use their legs. The offensive line for New England should be able to help Newton as well as it’s an improvement from the offensive line in Carolina. This move has made the Patriots go from an on the fence Wild Card team, to a lock in the playoffs if Cam Newton is and stays healthy.
A key aspect the Patriots have in their offense that will help Cam Newton is their running back duo of James White and Sony Michel. Not only are these guys good targets for Newton, but they provide a solid run game for Newton so he isn’t always passing and at risk of getting injured. Wide receivers Julian Edelman, Mohammed Sanu Sr, and N’Keal Harry are solid targets as well giving Cam Newton many great options on offense.
With the NFL preseason expected to happen in a little over a month, don’t be too shocked if Jarrett Stidham is given more chances to be the starter week 1 than Newton. Cam Newton has a nice veteran presence and is a great quarterback when healthy, but it does seem that the Patriots really like Stidham for the future so watch out for a bit of a quarterback battle for who is the starter for week 1. This is a win-win for both Cam Newton and the Patriots as Newton gets a chance to prove his worth if he can stay healthy, and the Patriots now have a veteran quarterback in Newton that can play if either Stidham is struggling or Newton is all healthy and ready to go. My original prediction for New England was going 8-8 or 9-7, but if Cam Newton is healthy, there’s a high chance that they go 10-6 or even 11-5 in this upcoming season.
